There was a recent article in the Boston Globe about the Curio House that Steve Foley is helping to build for this year’s Solar Decathlon, a contest sponsored by the US Department of Energy. You can check out the story for more information about why Steve is donating his time to help out the team from Tufts University and the Boston Architectural College.

Steve has been volunteering at the Curio House project at Tufts University over the past few weeks. The Curio House is a combined effort between the Boston Architectural College and Tufts University to compete in the 2009 Solar Decathlon. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL), the Solar Decathlon is a biannual competition in which twenty teams build and showcase fully operational, energy-efficient, marketable, solar-powered homes to the public on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Here’s an explanation of the project from the Curio House web site:
“Our team (Team Boston) is dedicated to showing YOU how our Curio home represents a structure of the future. The Curio home embodies the qualities of comfort, safety, and aesthetic beauty while also balancing the issues of sustainable building, such as ecological sensitivity, social consciousness and equity, and economic practicality.
While the Curio home represents a new way of living and promotes a new set of priorities, we hope that it can also serve as an symbol, a mascot if you will, for the larger issues of sustainable development and living. While we are extremely proud or our home design and our use of solar power, we believe this competition and our team is about doing something so much larger.”
